Summary 17 March 2020 – Coronavirus pandemic

The Committee held its monthly meeting on 17 March 2020, when the main issue discussed was the current status of the Club in the light of recent Government statements on the Coronavirus pandemic.

At the time of writing, the Government has suggested that members of the public should avoid visiting pubs and clubs, but has fallen short of instructing that such premises should close. It has further advised that the over-70s are at particular risk, and a number of our members who fall into this category have decided not to visit the Club in the foreseeable future.

We are determined to operate within guidelines, and fully respect the freedom of members to choose how they respond. We are mindful, however, that some members wish to carry on enjoying the Club facilities and, in the short term, we are doing what we can to keep them available and safe. Accordingly, bar staff are cleaning tables between use, and cleaning regimes pay special attention to door handles. Tables have been moved so that the space between them falls within the government guidelines, and there is a box of tissues on each table. By the time you read this, there should also be supplies of anti-bacterial gel available, too.

It is inevitable, though, that income will reduce as a result of Government guidance, and we have to carefully monitor the costs of staying open. With this in mind we will be meeting again next week to review sales in the intervening period, and determine further action. It may be, of course, that the Government will take a decision to order the closure of pubs and clubs and in those circumstances the decision will be taken out of our hands.

If members are able and willing to additionally add a donation to ease our financial situation this would, of course, be gratefully received.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The provisional date for the AGM is 26 April 2020, although it is almost inevitable that the meeting will need to be deferred as a result of government advice.

We are however intent on making the Club Annual Report and associated documentation available to members by the first week in April 2020.
